Thank you for going so deep into this subject. I’ve been listening to your podcast for a few months and was perplexed the other day when Stephani said that IF wasn’t so good for women. It was good to get the full story to understand better why she was skeptic. I did intermittent fasting for quite some time (18 months maybe?) and it did wonders for me. Curiously, it had the opposite effect of what you talked about. I obsessed less about food (turns out I don’t seize to exist if I miss a meal) and for the first time in my life (I had just turned 40) that my hunger signals were on point. I did the IF for health reasons, I had read a lot about the neurological benefits and was interested in creating a healthy microbiome. I had been reading books by the Jaminets and Dr. Perlmutter. I experienced 40lbs weight loss but it was unintended. I actually wasn’t expecting that to happen since I wasn’t restricting food in the 8 hour window. I did go from 180lbs to 140lbs and have been able to keep it off without IF. It was very sustainable. I didn’t have sleeping problems, I was never hungry (until meal times), I never snacked, my mood was good. The only reason I stopped because I was in a work situation (temporary), where I didn’t have control of when I could eat so I was afraid that I would fast too much.
I was able to kick my sugar addiction, I was gluten free and ate moderate amount of carbs (mostly white rice and potatoes).
Only once in my life have I tried to count calories. I was in my early to mid 30’s and found that it was the stupidest thing you could do because it is impossible unless you eat a lot of unhealthy processed food.
At the same time my exercise routine got better and more diverse (less couch potato) – so that could have contributed as well.
Anyways. I just wanted to tell my story to show that women’s experiences can be really different and not everyone has the same results.
