Hey Noelle! I’ve only had a chance to listen to the first bit of this podcast so far, but I feel compelled to reach out before I listen to all of it. I totally and completely relate to what you’re experiencing right now with chronic stress and missing spending time with friends that you have a long history with. Your description of what you’re feeling and going through right now is so spot on with what I’m experiencing.
I’m finishing up the didactic coursework for my master’s in occupational therapy right now and according to some recent bloodwork I had done, I’m experiencing chronic stress. Most of the time it’s hard for me to get anything of real value done in the afternoons and evenings because my brain just doesn’t seem to want to process anything. Sometimes it’s bad enough that even reading the directions for a school assignment can’t be processed. I’ve described it to friends and family as feeling like either I’m trudging through wet cement or I just keep running into a wall. I see the words, but as soon as they’re in my brain nothing happens with them. It’s incredibly frustrating because I have deadlines and other people relying on me for a lot of the work I have to do, so not being able to give my best is embarrassing.
Contributing to the stress from school is that I miss my friends from home so. freaking. bad. I miss being able to just, as you said, go to lunch with a dear friend randomly and being able to completely relax. Also, my fiance lives thousands of miles away (I’m in Charleston, SC and he’s in Denver, CO). Being apart from each other these past 16 months (we’ve got 9 more to go!) have been incredibly difficult. I literally feel like my heart and whole being are aching for him.
Anyways, I just wanted to tell you that hearing you describe how you’re struggling with the chronic stress and not being around close friends right now meant so much to me. I often feel like the stuff I’m stressed about shouldn’t be a big deal because other people are experiencing the same thing and don’t seem to have as much trouble. Or they’re going through far worse. It makes me feel weak. But hearing that you that you’re having similar issues is of comfort to me. I’m not alone.
I hope that sometime soon you’re able to have a break from the stress of being in a new place, not being around friends, and having a lot of, albeit awesome, but stressful stuff going on with your career. I hope you know how much of an impact your work is on not only me, but what I imagine to be a LOT of other women.
Now I need to find a nugget of time to finish listening to the podcast!! It sounds like an especially good one!!
