There’s nothing quite like curling up on the couch with a big, chunky blanket and a warm cup of turmeric hot chocolate after a long day.

Turmeric hot chocolate has the perfect blend of warming spices and rich cocoa, and can be made from scratch in minutes. Not only is this drink creamy and delicious, the addition of the turmeric gives it powerful anti-inflammatory properties.

While turmeric hot chocolate may be new to you, you’ve likely heard of golden milk (or turmeric tea), which is a traditional warm beverage made with turmeric, milk, and spices. More recently, turmeric has become much more popular in the Western world because it contains bioactive compounds with medicinal properties. The most beneficial of these compounds is called curcumin, which has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

Studies show curcumin may reduce heart disease and help prevent debilitating diseases such as cancer and Alzheimer’s. It also can help with digestion, arthritis, and joint pain. In fact, curcumin is so powerful that it matches the effectiveness of some anti-inflammatory drugs.

Both black pepper and fat increase the absorption of curcumin, which is why this turmeric hot chocolate includes a pinch of black pepper and is made with nourishing, full-fat coconut milk. The addition of the cocoa, raw honey, and other savory spices makes it an irresistible and slightly sweet winter drink. It’s a wonderful nightcap to end the day, and the kids will love being able to sip it with you.

Feel free to add additional spices that are your favorite. The nutmeg can be swapped for cayenne pepper if you like a spicy kick, or you can add a little bit of pumpkin pie spice to make this more of a fall treat.

Made some of this tonight. I used monk fruit instead of honey. It was delicious and perfect for this time of year.
